The Naugatuck Valley Health District (NVHD) is the local health department for the City of Shelton. Founded in 1972 as a collaborative effort to provide a full array of official local public health functions to the area municipalities, it is committed to improving the quality of life for all it serves through the promotion of health, prevention of disease and by assuring a safe and clean environment. The NVHD is responsible, in partnership with state and federal agencies, for enforcement of the State Public Health Code, relevant State Statutes and Regulations, and Local Health Ordinances. It has two interactive divisions: Environmental Health and Community Health. The goal of the Environmental Health Division is to prevent illness, disability or death from interactions between people and the environment. Sanitarian inspectors perform health inspections, investigate and resolve complaints about health hazards, and educate the public. Some of the primary areas of responsibility include the following: subsurface sewage disposal systems, food service, private water wells, lead investigations and abatement, day cares and schools, public pools and camps, hair and nail salons, and nuisance complaints. The Community Health Division has legal responsibility for the investigation and control of infectious diseases including West Nile virus, rabies, tuberculosis, foodborne outbreaks, and acts of bioterrorism, among many others. It also provides a wide array of preventive health programs aimed at increasing the span of healthy life for all our residents. Some of those programs include the following: adult and childhood immunizations, childhood lead poisoning prevention, WIC nutrition services, child health care clinics, maternal and child health services, periodic health screenings and Healthy Start.
