How to Get a Job with the City of Shelton
What's available
All job openings are advertised in the Huntington Herald or come to the
Department of Human Resources offices at 54 Hill Street to review the list of
all job classifications and fill out an application.
The City of Shelton
Shelton is a city on the front lines of economic growth, urban development, and
change, and is moving forward with a vision and desire to heighten the quality
of life for its residents. Our employees play an important role in the future of
Shelton.
City employees provide direct services to a diverse population through
activities such as maintaining city buildings and streets and parks, providing
public health services, and policing.
The City of Shelton hires employees based on a merit system and conducts
examinations to ensure that employees are hired and promoted on the basis of
merit and fitness for the job. The City of Shelton provides equal employment
opportunities for all persons regardless of race, religion, sex, national
origin, ethnicity, age, disability, political affiliation.
Reviewing the job announcement
The selection process begins with the posting of a job announcement. The job
announcement for permanent employment describes the general duties, salary, type
of examination(s) and the job-related areas that may be tested, as well as
where, when, and how to file an application.
Submitting a job application
Are available at the Department of Human Resources offices at 54 Hill Street in
Shelton. Applicants are advised to pay close attention to the terms of the
announcement to ensure that minimum qualifications are met and that the
application is submitted on time and at the appropriate location. Failure to do
so may lead to rejection of the application.
Once you have filed an application, it is extremely important that you inform
the Human Resources Office of any change of address while in the
application/examination process. All notification by the Department of Human
Resources is done by mail.
You may apply for more than one job position – however, you must specify the
positions you are applying for at the top of the application. You may attach a
resume.
Keeping an application “On File”
We do not keep applications on file after a job has been filled. Once the job
vacancy is closed and someone has been hired, none of the other applications are
retained. However, if you have applied for other positions not yet tested for,
we will keep your application on file for one year.
Taking the examination
The City of Shelton administers a variety of examinations, designed specifically
for each job classification, which test the knowledge, ability and skill levels
required for successful job performance. Your examination may include one or
more of the following components:
Written Examination - Used to test candidates' technical and/or general
knowledge. Written examinations typically include written exercises such as
multiple choice questions.
Oral Examination - A panel of two or more subject-matter experts asking each
candidate a series of job-related questions. Candidates are rated based on the
specific knowledge, ability, and skill levels demonstrated when answering the
questions. This test is NOT a casual job interview.
Getting the Job
Although there is no set time required to select an applicant, every effort is
made to reach a prompt appointment. After you have successfully passed the
examination(s), your name will be placed on a list. This list is used to fill
vacancies in the job classification for the specific period of time indicated on
the list, usually one year. |
