As a growing community populated by many young families, Shelton strives to provide a rich, stimulating learning environment for students at all levels. The major goal of our educational system is to impart knowledge by offering varied instructional strategies, and introducing new teaching initiatives which will equip students to pursue further self-education in a responsible manner throughout their adult life. To this end, the Board of Education employs administrators and teachers who are highly competent, creative, and willing to grow as the needs of our community change. Shelton's abundance of educational resources and strong community spirit make this city a wonderful environment in which to live, work, and learn. Board of Education The Shelton Board of Education, which consists of a nine member elected group, is responsible for establishing policies and procedures that support educational programs which benefit students in grades k-12. The Board was responsible for developing a Safe Schools Plan, which clearly outlines the available support services of both the schools and community. Future plans include long-range study focusing on new and expanded educational programs, as well as a facilities renovation and new construction plan needed to accommodate future school growth. The Shelton Board of Education is governed by the General Statutes of the State of Connecticut and also operates under the City Charter. The Board of Education and school system receive funds from all levels of government including the local level. Superintendent of Schools Under the leadership of Robin Willink, Superintendent of Schools, Shelton continues to be recognized for its improved student performance by being awarded a state achievement grant that is based upon the CMT index growth from one academic year to another. This success is attributed to several new district initiatives that have strengthened support to the students and staff. The district is equally proud of strong writing scores in all grades but especially in grades 4 and 6 where students scored above the state and Shelton's Educational Reference Group (ERG) average. Grade 4 students achieved 72% and 6th grade students scored 78%. While math scores continue to offer a challenge to improve, time and effort have been committed to curriculum revision, professional development opportunities, and piloting new materials in an effort to raise students' math performance. Last year, Shelton High School graduated 313 students with 78% going on to two and four-year schools of higher learning. The Superintendent's goal for the Shelton School System is to enhance student learning that will ensure each student's ability to become a productive and contributing citizen, and to pursue further self-education in a responsible manner throughout his or her life. Shelton's Schools "Our mission is to assist every student to become a successful learner in a complex, technological informed-based, rapidly changing world" The Shelton School system is intensively committed to providing all of its 5,500 students with educational programs and services that will enhance their ability to become responsible citizens, lifelong learners, and productive members of the new millennium and emerging global society. Shelton is home to six K-6 elementary schools, a state-of-the-art intermediate school for grades 7 and 8 which opened in September 2001, and a high school serving more than 1,500 students. Shelton employs a total of 437 certified staff, which includes teachers and administrators, along with a support staff of 193 employees. Opportunities are provided to participate in professional development activities and enhance learning experiences. |
